1999 JUNE: MAGAZINE (MANNISH) - THE WAY WE WERE
The talk interview Ohno and Sho had while they were still Jrs, a few months before their debut; published on Mannish June 1999 issue.
Addendum: I have found the actual scan for this particular talk(yay!) and discovered that the transcription I found and translated only had half of the actual talk on the page itself. So here's the revised one:
S: Ohno-kun ♡, it's been quite some time ne ♡ since the last time we get to talk properly like this. Last time we did was around summer last year, I think?
O: It's been that long? Somehow it didn't feel like that at all.
S: I've mentioned Ohno-kun's name in the May issue. When asked "Who is the most kind Junior?" I answered "Ohno-kun.". That's because I have never seen you angry.
O: Well, that's because I never got angry XD. I might have lost my temper in a split second and shown my irritation differently though. But I had never truly gotten angry so far. Or rather... you are the only one I can never get angry with, I guess.
S: Ahahaha~ What's with that suggestive look? XD. You're always saying things like that, Ohno-kun. Seriously it's startling me so please cut it out...
O: There's no reason for you to get startled by it XD
S: But you know, when you went to Kyoto, I felt so lonely. Even when I called, you never seemed to pick it up.
O: Yeah... It seems that since from the very beginning, our lives have been passing each other without truly meeting... (appearing lonesome)
S: Ahahaha, why have you turned into such a character? XD
O: That's because... I like you, Sho-kun.
S: That's such a meaningful glance u gave there XD. During summer 2 years ago, we spent the whole night talking to each other, right?
O: We talked about nothing but trivial stuffs and the next thing we knew, it's already morning.
S: Right, right. The things we talked weren't particularly important enough to drag on till morning XD.
O: But it was so much fun, right? And of course it's the same even now, but I was really brilliant back then, wasn't I?
S: Ahahahaha. What's up with that? Ohno-kun has always been a dazzling existence.
O: You think so too, right? That's because I'm the back-lighting. I am so surprised (of that fact). xD
S: Mou~ Ohno-kun, what nonsense are you saying? XD I am the one who is surprised here. But still, this odd nature (of yours) is irresistible. XD By the way, when you gang together with Massan (Junichi Matsumoto) you both became a super-duper strongest combi ne.
O:You meant to say that when I get involved with Massan, it's dangerous, right. XD
S: That's exactly it XD. After all, during concerts or lessons, when these two get together it's terrible, you know. At places such as hotel, they would be wearing yukata; Massan plays the role of the granny while Ohno-kun as the grandpa, and they wander around everyone's rooms. It was such a big hit ne. XD
O: Massan is amazing!
S: It's not just Massan alone; Ohno-kun is also amazing xD.
O: You think so? Even if you praise me to that extent...
S: I'm not praising you, I'm not.
O: With Massan, we've been together during January's "MASK", and that fella's level has really gone up. In all my life up till now, no one has ever made me laugh as much as Massan did.
S: Hmmm... it's a plausible story XD.
O: You think so too, right? It is possible, you know. Coz actually, I am telling the truth. XD
S: However, when Ohno-kun is with Massan you also become something quite fierce. Ohno-kun, when you're alone; you often seemed like you've just woken up, always appearing sleepy and relatively docile but when you're paired with Massan, you become fairly strong ne XD. You're both are the best couple in my opinion.
O: Don't you pair me and Massan together like that~!! Sho-kun and I... (fixing his eyes on Sho-kun through the mirror).
S: Ahahaha~ Please stop it~ If there's weird rumors coming up what are we going to do? Ah, but for the questionnaires in the May issue; for the question: "Who do want to make as your girlfriend among the Jrs.?" I answered "Massan!". I just can't seem to ignore him XD.
O: Why?! Just leave him be XD. I would hate to have such girlfriend! Coz the opposite side is much more yummier...
S: Why there's taste competition with 'girlfriend'? It's so like Oh-chan ne xD.

大野：だって、俺、翔くん好きだもん。
櫻井：なんかスゲー意味深な目…（笑）２年前の夏、夜通し話したことあったよね。
大野：くだらない話ばっかしてて朝になっちゃったんだよね（笑）。
櫻井：そうそう。別にその日に、朝までかかって話す必要はどこにもない話（笑）
大野：でも、楽しかったよね（笑）今もだけど、あの頃の俺って輝いてたでしょ？
櫻井：アハハハ。何それっ（笑）大野くんはいつも眩しい存在だよっ。
大野：そうでしょ。俺、逆光だからね。びっくりするよ（笑）。
櫻井：も～う！大野くん何言ってんの？こっちがびっくりするよ。でも、この変さがたまらないねっ（笑）。 っていうかさぁ、まっさん（松本淳一）と絡むとめっちゃめっちゃ最強コンビなんだよね～。

櫻井：そうそう（笑）。だってさぁ、コンサートの時とか、レッスンの時とかこの２人が集まると大変なんだよ。ホテルとかでさぁ、浴衣着て、まっさんがおばあちゃん役で、大野くんがおじいさん役で、みんなの部屋を２人で回んの。超うけるね（笑）。
大野：まっさんはね～、スゴイよっ！
櫻井：まっさんはじゃないよっ！大野くんもすごいよっ（笑）。

大野：まっさんとは、一月の「ＭＡＳＫ］でも一緒だったけど、あいつはかなりレベルを上げたよ。俺さぁ、今まで人生生きてきて、こんなに笑ったことないってくらい笑わせてもらったのは、まっさんだね（笑）。

大野：でしょ。ありえる話だよ。だって実際、俺がありえてるんだもん（笑）。

Discovering this was such a huge thing for me; to know that even way before Arashi debuted, Ohno was comfortable enough being with Sho to be teasing him in such ways. I'm sure at that time, neither knew that they will end up in a same group months later and even after 13 years... still together. :D
Yeah, I love the Sho's bashfulness too, and the way he was jumping to other topics so quickly. Oh gosh, he's really easy to read.

Glad to know that our decision to keep the original Japanese transcriptions benefits our reader.
We also think that some of you lovelies might have a basic understanding in Japanese if not fully, and they might catch some of the nuances in the original text that might have been compromised for the sake of flow in the translation.

I think Chibi!Ohno prior to their debut was kinda kakkoii, though. I can imagine Sho's heart fluttering all through the interview.

Sho being a prude; especially with Ohno xD. I think he knew how dangerous it is to indulge Ohno. Though it didn't really stop him from being a tease sometimes, ne?
By the way, I've found the actual scan for this talk and there's more to it; so I added the whole thing now. While trying to translate this, I kept wondering if Ohno was on crack because he was just so random that I'm not even sure what he meant sometimes. I totally understood how flabbergasted Sho must've felt.

aaaaahhh... my Yama feels!<3 i love how Ohno always teases Sho.
Just want to share that I voted for Oretachi no Song to be included in the Arafes 2013 and was looking forward to it when I found out that some fans also voted for it and some even confirmed that they heard the song being practiced at Kokuritsu, but it seems that it was not performed. :-( Hope they get to sing this song again in their next concert.

Well, I guess there's nothing else I can do but to show my appreciation at your contribution in showing support to Oretachi no Song. I believe that things like these, even if they don't come true right now; I know that it was acknowledged on a certain level and something might happen in the future in the regards to this :D.
To me; once again I get reminded of how I have always been too focused on looking forward to upcoming 'epic' yama interactions that I don't fully enjoy what I've been blessed with so far. So now you see me getting all pumped up at posting here xD.

it's really adorable how this was actually happening before the debut; that Ohno is comfortable enough to tease Sho in such a way. I mean, the usually sleepy-looking guy teasing the often 'bad-tempered' kid and still living to this day? Amazing.
